2005 NLM Translational Informatics Grants
Deadlines to apply: June 1, and October 1, 2005
Up to $4 million of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) funds for Translational Informatics grants are available in fiscal year 2005. NLM Translational Informatics grants emphasize the use of information technology to bring usable, useful health-related information to end users. Computers and networks are the basis of information systems that provide health professionals, researchers, educators, students, and consumers with time- and place-independent access to the published biomedical knowledge, clinical files and images, and scientific databases they need. They also provide the ability to communicate with patients, health administrators, and colleagues around the world. NLM defines the term "information system" broadly to include equipment, software, knowledge resources and services, and human expertise.
GIS can be a strong tool in many of the allowable grant areas such as improving the usability of interfaces and digital resources.

A message from Marjorie: I missed the conference!
First of all, I am taking an incredible 8-week web writing course. This course is through a woman by the name of Kendall Summerhawk and here is the website of her web writing course: http://www.websitewisdomu.com/. I am just in the second week of the course, and she is taking us very slowly, step-by-step, into writing our web content. What is so invaluable about this course, also, is that all of us in the course offer feedback to each other in a private student area.
I am combining this with what I have been learning from Robert Middleton (http://www.actionplan.com/). I attended one of his few live seminars a few months ago and one of the bonuses for signing up by a particular day was his Virtual Marketing audio course. This course has been fantastic! It's almost 12 hours of content, plus the notes from the class! So, right now I am focusing all my attention on how to combine what I learn from him with what I am learning from Kendall's class.
Next, I wanted to tell callers that on Wednesday, May 18, from 2-3pm Eastern time, the new coach connection group that I belong to will be having the topic of affiliates as their topic. If anyone attended last month's call on certification for coaches, this is the same group. For anyone interested, you can just call in at the time. The number is 865-362-4050, access code 2460#. I've been very interested in this topic, also, and have found that RD's are very unfamiliar with it.
I know both of these topics are slated for upcoming discussion, so I thought it would be timely to mention.
Now that I am a CPE provider, an idea that's been rolling around in my head is to create a 3-part (6 CPE) course on how to create teleclasses. This is a very different process than presentations, and the course will be very interactive, where each participant will actually CREATE a teleclass along the way. ¶ 9:14 AM 0 comments

Thanks to all who particpated in our conference on Thursday. Next month we will review some websites looking at features we like ( and dislike). Please email me sites you would like to review. I will compile a list for the June 23rd teleconference. For FNCE in St Louis, I will propose a round table session on using affiliates to generate website revenue.

Participants of the teleconference felt it was important to focus on increasing technology skills of the members of our profession. This group should not be limited to internet technology or traditional tools such as desktop and laptop computers. Members need to work with their state and local dietetic organizations to influence meeting plans to include technology. As a profession we have not kept up with other professions in the technology arena. We need to recruit suppport from members as well as sponsors to fund technology sessions and training for nutrition professionals. Areas of interest include technology management systems, non-traditional vehicles for accessing technology, and website design to include marketing strategies to generate revenue. ¶ 5:35 AM 0 comments
